What is Airside Liability?
Airside Liability is an insurance cover that covers companies and individuals against public liability when operating airside. Accidents can result in significant claims when these happen past the security gates at an airport, these costs will be hugely damaging without adequate cover in place.
What does public liability mean?
Airside Liability is a form of public liability, but is focused on the airside part of the airport and/or facility in which the exposure is possible. Public Liability is one of the most common insurances that cover accidents such as a fall or a slip or damage to a third party, that can be claimed against you or your business whether you are at fault or not.
XXXX HERE WE PUT AN IMAGE BANNER XXX
It is therefore, very important to check that any public liability insurance cover that you have, covers your operations, when you are airside.
I already have public liability!
Most public liability policies totally exclude airport related work! It is very common for companies or individual contractors to require a higher level of public liability if operating airside. If you need advice you can access a review through Flycovr insurance partners, and assess whether your insurance is adequate. Higher risk levels will require much larger indemnity limits and therefore airside is often a top up to public liability cover.
What is considered airside?
Airside is the term used for the secured area of an airport that can simply be seen as passed the security gates and checkpoints, or within restricted areas. This can include various facilities, but essentially encompass all infrastructure and spaces that have restricted access and are limited to those that offer maintenance, movement, operation and handling of aircraft.
These areas include, taxiways, runways and all aprons where aircraft are parked, loaded or unloaded, refuelled, cleaned, boarded or maintained.
As well as the physical aircraft parking areas and aprons, airfield lighting needs to be included as a component within airside liability. This includes all areas lit for nighttime navigation or poor weather conditions, such as runway edge lights, approach and taxiways.
Does it matter what location the contract is in?
Our specialist partner can provide instant access and will cover all UK airports and UK based facilities and operators.
For USA, CAnada and Europe, we have access to tailor-made solutions through our panel of global aviation insurance specialists.
Is Airside a Potential Gap in my contractor public liability policy?
Yes, it is very important to check any insurance you have and assess whether the current policy covers the legal liability to work airside. General public insurance and motor insurance policies will most likely not cover airside activity and therefore this could certainly be a legitimate gap in your cover that is exposing you and your company to huge liability.
Do my contracts not include airside liability cover?
Depending on what contract work you or your business does, or depending on the public liability or vehicle insurance that your company has for your operations, you may still require airside liability insurance. This is because many public policies that are obtained, includin when through general insurance houses rather than aviation specialists, it could be that high risk locations are excluded. This means that you could be at risk with certain areas such as airports are not included in your insurance.
Sounds crazy? It isn’t. Flycovr have customers that are fully operational in the aviation industry but because they purchased insurance without aviation specific expertise, it was highlighted that certain airside and aviation activities were excluded. It could be that your policy does have some public liability, or was purchased through an additional premium, but these often have much smaller payout limits than you actually require.
What work is covered?
Essentially all contractor and maintenance work that operates airside requires liability cover.

Does Airside Liability cover the operation of vehicles?
Yes, Airside vehicle liability insurance is a must have. It is essentially for any individual or business that operates airside. However, your standard vehicle insurance policy will most likely not cover you whilst you are operating airside, and if it does, it may not have the cover your operations require.
This can be an absolute requirement for the airport and can be tied into policies that you have or quickly bought through Flycovr partners today.
Is airside required for a quick project or short term contract?
Yes it is, and you can absolutely get short term policies. In practice, it doesn’t matter how long the contract is for, if you are airside, you are airside, and you need cover. These policies can be for a few days, weeks, months or even for an annual project. Whatever you require, Flycovr can provide you access to fast policies that will insure you for what you need.
How much does airside liability cost?
Insurance premiums can never be quoted instantly for liability covers as it entirely depends on the type of operations and size of the vehicles that maybe in use. The nature of the work is critical especially when considering the proximity to the aircraft in which operations are carried out. You can get instant quotes though and you can access an instant £50 million cover policy through Flycovr today.
